Washington County's longtime administrator was honored this week at a statewide gathering of officials from Minnesota's 87 counties.

Jim Schug, the county's top official since 1994, received the Outstanding Service Award at the Association of Minnesota Counties conference held in St. Cloud on Monday. Schug has helped guide Washington County's rapid growth into the state's fifth-most populous county while overseeing a budget with the third-lowest per capita spending in the state, according to county figures.

District 5 commissioner Lisa Weik, who represents much of Woodbury, praised Schug at the Washington County Board's meeting on Thursday, saying the administrator helped the county anticipate millions of dollars in cuts to state aid dollars -- a fact that she said has helped the county continue providing a high level of service to residents.

"I'm very proud of Jim Schug," she said.

Schug was one of only two recipients of service awards at Monday's banquet. He expressed surprise at the selection during Thursday's board meeting.

"It was quite a surprise and an honor, and (it) reflects the good work we've done over the years in Washington County," he said.

Before serving as Washington County Administrator, Schug was the county's community services director, and also worked in Minnesota's Redwood and Crow Wing Counties
