Thone, Tommies begin quest for national title
Woodbury native Tom Thone, a goaltender for the University of St. Thomas mens lacrosse club was named Most Valuable Player of Upper Midwest Lacrosse League (UMLL) championship tournament as the Tommies defeated Moorehead State and St. John's University to advance to the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) national championships.
Thone, an all-conference selection who is also under consideration for All-American honors, leads all of UMLL Division II with a .739 save percentage as the Tommies enter the MCLA tournament with an unblemished 13-0 record.
The No. 1 seeded Tommies were scheduled to take on No. 16 Sam Houston State (10-2 overall) in the opening round of MCLA play in Denver, Colo. on Tuesday, May 11, after the Bulletin went to press.
A victory over Sam Houston would put the Tommies in the national quarterfinals against either No. 8 Grove City or No. 9 Western Oregon on Wednesday, May 12.
The national semifinals are scheduled for Friday, May 14 with the final on Saturday, May 15 at 5 p.m. in a game slated to be broadcast on Fox College Sports network.
