Teen rescued from fast-moving river Sunday

A 23-year-old Minneapolis man and a 16-year-old Newport youth were

rescued from the fast-moving Vermillion River Sunday afternoon.

Hastings Police, Fire and Ambulance Service, Dakota County deputies

and a Minnesota State Patrol trooper responded to the area of the

river near the 18th Street bridge at about 2:30 p.m.

The two came to Hastings to swim in the river, but apparently did not

realize how high or swift the river was.

Hastings Police Officer David Bauer entered the river and, working

with firefighters and officers on the riverbank, guided the two to

safety on the river's edge.

Hastings Fire Department rescue personnel used a special harness to

help the two from the river.
