Take Heart reaches goal; celebration planned
More than 7,000 people in Woodbury now know hands-only CPR.
"That's a lot of people," said Angela Kain, Woodbury firefighter/EMT. "I am very proud of what we have accomplished and am grateful to the people that contributed."
Kain is coordinator of "Take Heart Woodbury," a campaign launched in February 2012 with the goal of training at least 10 percent of city's population in hands-only CPR in the first year.
The campaign didn't start off with thousands wanting to learn, though, but Kain said it goes to show that a lot of people are afraid of doing something wrong in an emergency situation.
"I was a little taken back in the beginning when I heard why people declined to learn hands-only CPR," she said. "It was discouraging at first but also showed statistics and research were right."
But during Woodbury Days last summer and early this year, the Public Safety Department continued training efforts to reach the goal and will hold a "Celebrate our 7,000 heroes" event at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 28 at the Woodbury Public Safety Building.
