Swirl is a wine shop and wine bar offering rare wines, a menu of small plates along with wine flights and wines by the glass that change weekly.

"Customers love the fact that we're changing the wines every week so every time they come here there's something new to try," Swirl Wine Bar owner Dave Jarvis said. "Minnesotans are very adventurous with wine and they want to discover something new."

Jarvis said the decision to expand by nearly 900 square feet was at the request of customers.

"Our customers told us we needed to," he said.

Swirl Wine Bar, which opened in May of 2010, used to measure just less than 700 square feet.

In order to accommodate the expansion, Jarvis had to close down the Afton Bean coffee shop.

"We didn't want to necessarily say goodbye to coffee and ice cream," Jarvis said. "But, I think everyone is super excited about the wine bar, so that makes the coffee shop almost shadowed a little bit."

Jarvis said the decision to close Afton Bean wasn't that difficult because Current and Sail Away Café provide coffee.

In terms of ice cream sales, Jarvis said he is hopeful Selma's Ice Cream Parlour re-opens in the spring. If it doesn't, he said he plans to open something.

"That's an important part of a community," he said.

In addition to increased space, the new Swirl Wine Bar also includes a fireplace, a second bar and additional high and low top seating.

"We went from a little wine closet to a bona fide wine bar," Jarvis said.

For input on the expansion, Jarvis said he went to customers for suggestions.

Swirl Wine Bar can seat between 40 and 50 customers now, an increase of up to 30.

"We got a lot of great feedback, so we did exactly what our customers told us they wanted," he said.

Another new feature of Swirl Wine Bar is a specialized wine display in the center of the bar; entrees have also been added to the menu.

In addition to Swirl Wine Bar's expansion, Jarvis said they are also actively looking at locations to open a second Swirl Wine Bar in such areas as Blaine, Maple Grove and Uptown Minneapolis.

Swirl Wine Bar will be hosting a grand re-opening Oct. 29 from 1 to 5 p.m. During the event, roughly 15 wines will be available for tasting. Visit www.swirlmywine.com for more information on Swirl Wine Bar.
