Super Target now open in Woodbury
Eager shoppers stormed into the new Super Target Tuesday night for a special look at the new store following a ribbon cutting ceremony by Woodbury Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens.
The 175,000 square foot store officially opened Wednesday morning, but shoppers had the chance to eat some cake, celebrate the opening and experience the new store smell until 11 p.m. Tuesday.
Super Target, part of the Commerce Hill Development that was approved by Woodbury City Council two years ago, brings between 300 to 400 new jobs and will possibly attract more retailers and restaurants to that part of town, said Janelle Schmitz, the city's planning and economic development manager.
"It's going to spur the rest of that area to complete that development," she said, adding that with Phase II of the Comprehensive Plan under way, the company looked at the city's future growth and how to accommodate it by adding the big retailer.
The store, located on Commerce Drive near Sam's Club and Wal-Mart, joins numerous other retailers in Woodbury and its sister store at the Valley Creek Plaza just a few miles away.
Antoine LaFromboise, spokesperson for Target Corporation, said the store is the only Super Target out of 21 new locations opening in 2011 nationwide. The company studied sales volume, site constraints and needs to the community before deciding it was feasible to open the new Woodbury store. Market potential, competition, demographics and store performance data were also analyzed.
The new store is furnished with wider, bigger aisles to make it easier for employees and shoppers to navigate. It offers a grocery department, deli and bakery sections, a Target Café, Starbucks, Target Optical and a pharmacy.
Store Team Lead Mark Tillett, a Woodbury resident who's responsible for opening the store after leading the Apple Valley and Fridley Super Targets, is now excited to be working and living in his hometown.
"The mayor wasn't kidding when she said my walkie talkie works at home," Tillett said with a laugh.
The company has been working with city officials to plan for the new store over the past 10 years. Most jobs have been filled but there are still some open positions available for those interested in joining the store.
The store is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
"We're just delighted to have another Target in Woodbury and I can't wait to start shopping," Stephens said.
