State wrestling update: Day 2 tough on Lyden, Linssen and Herold-Plakut
Day two of the 2011-12 state tournament was a rough one for area wrestlers.
Out of the three south Washington County competitors to reach the second day, and the state championship semifinals on Saturday, March 3, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Woodbury sophomore Justin-Herold was the lone wrestler to win a match, taking fifth place with a 13-0 win over Spring Lake Park senior Phillip Horsager. East Ridge freshman Reid Lyden and Park sophomore Cody Linssen weren't as fortunate. However, by reaching the semifinals, Lyden, Linssen and Herold-Plakut all each earned All-State honors - reserved for the top six wrestlers in each weight class.
In the championship semifinals, Herold-Plakut (34-10) was defeated 13-6 by St. Michael-Albertville sophomore Mark Voss at 132-pounds. JHP then fell to Apple Valley senior Dakota Trom (28-7) by a pin. Trom, who entered state ranked No. 2, went on to take third place. Herold-Plakut bounced back, however, beating Horsager (15-9 ) for fifth place, matching the finish of teammate Ben Donnelly at last year's state tournament.
At 106 pounds, Lyden (39-9) lost 8-4 to No. 1 ranked Albert Lea junior Trevor Westerlund (37-3) and at 195 pounds, Linssen (34-4) lost 11-4 to No. 4-ranked Roseville junior Trae Story (41-1).
Linssen suffered a shoulder injury in the first period of his match against Story and forfeited the rest of his matches on the day, finishing in sixth place in the Class AAA 195-pound weight class.
After the loss to Westerlund, Lyden dropped into the consolation semifinals or "wrestlebacks" where he lost to Alexandria sophomore Trent Piepenburg 5-2 in overtime for a chance at the third-place match. Lyden also suffered an injury in his match and forfeited fifth place, finishing in sixth overall at 106 pounds. Lyden, the first wrestler from East Ridge to win a match at the state meet, is also the first Raptor wrestler to earn All-State. Linssen is the first All-State wrestler from Park since 2009, when Jared Flaata finished in fifth place. Linssen is the 17th All-State wrestler in Park history.
All the wrestlers that reached the semifinals went 2-0 on the first day of the tournament, Friday, March 2.
