State Fair's Floralpalooza to include Woodbury contingent
The stories of Dr. Seuss will come alive - in flowers - at this year's Minnesota State Fair and Woodbury's own Flowers on the Park will be a part of the whimsical atmosphere.
The 2013 Minnesota State Florist Association's Floralpalooza will be taking place during the State Fair from Aug. 22 to Sept. 2.
The floral display, located in the Agriculture Horticulture Rotunda, tasks local florists with creating themed floral displays every year.
This year's Floralpalooza will illustrate several of Dr. Seuss' books through flowers.
A total of seven Minnesota florists will be featured during Floralpalooza.
Flowers on the Park will be illustrating "Horton Hears a Who."
"It's going to be a great draw for families and children," said Deb Katzmark, owner of Flowers on the Park. "It's going to be very whimsical with lots of bright colors.
Other books that will be featured during Floralpalooza include "Cat in the Hat," "The Lorax, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and "The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins."
"This is a great chance to expand on what Seuss has done.," Katzmark said.
Katzmark said she and her design team decided on "Horton Hears a Who" for their display since it is one of their favorite books.
For their displays, Katzmark and her team went to their greenhouse in search of the strangest plants they could find
"We picked out every unusual plant we thought looked unusual and whimsical like Seuss," she said.
In total, Katzmark is expecting her team to spend about 60 hours arranging the displays.
"It's chance for us to be creative and do something outside of the job," she said. "It's a fun way to show the community different ways to do floral displays and how you can bring floral into just about anything creative."
