Several area soccer and volleyball teams got their seasons off and running on Thursday night with a pair of Woodbury squads earning victories, while the New Life Academy volleyball team opened it's campaign with a victory.

WHS Boys Soccer

The Woodbury boys soccer team began 2009 with a dominating 6-1 victory over visiting Champlin Park at Royals Stadium.

Ben Cherrey scored the Royals first goal of the year just over a minute and a half into play to put the hosts on top to stay. Fellow forward Pat Moore increased the lead to 2-0 five minutes later before midfielder Eric Miller concluded Woodbury's first half scoring with a penalty kick goal midway through the frame to put WHS up 3-0 before the visiting Rebels scored their lone tally in the closing minutes before the half.

The Royals added three more scores in the final 40 minutes to cruise to their first win of the year. Woodbury hosts Hill-Murray on Saturday.
