Woodbury track Mariella Mile fundraiser May 4
The Woodbury boys and girls track programs are hosting a fundraiser on May 4, with all of the proceeds going towards the 5P- Society and Children's Hospitals and Clinics Genetics Research Department. Festivities begin at 9:30 a.m. at Woodbury High School Stadium. This event is being held to raise awareness of 5p-. The honoree is Mariella Francesca Lucio-Thomas, who was born with 5p- on June 3, 2010. She is an inspirational little girl with an infectious smile. Each year in the United States, approximately 50 to 60 children are born with 5p- Syndrome (five p minus), also known as Cat Cry Syndrome or Cri du Chat Syndrome. 5p- Syndrome is characterized at birth by a high pitched cry, low birth weight, poor muscle tone, microcephaly, and potential medical complications. "5p-" is a term used by geneticists to describe a portion of chromosome number five that is missing in these individuals. Please contact Jim Scott with questions at (651) 768-4880.
