Special Olympics Minnesota’s Young Athletes program returns to Woodbury
Kids age 2-7 can take part in the Special Olympics Minnesota’s Young Athletes program in Woodbury. This creative program is one that uses basic sports equipment to encourage children to exercise their bodies and imaginations, while enhancing social interaction between these athletes, their families and the surrounding communities.
Children with and without intellectual disabilities come together for an hour-long weekly session, during which they are given opportunities to work on hand-eye coordination and basic motor skills training. Beneficial to all young athletes, this weekly program will be held from 6-7 p.m. every Thursday from Sept. 12 – Oct. 25 at the YMCA of Woodbury – located at 2175 Radio Drive.
A goal of the Young Athletes program is to welcome family members of children with intellectual disabilities into the Special Olympics network of support, before their children are of age to officially participate in Special Olympics events. This goal of inclusion and understanding is one shared statewide by Special Olympics Minnesota programs.
Since its inception in 1968, Special Olympics has established itself as a preeminent global organization offering sports training and competition opportunities to people with intellectual disabilities ages eight and above.
Special Olympics Minnesota offers children and adults with intellectual disabilities year-round sports training and competition. Through Special Olympics’ athletic, health and leadership programs, people with intellectual disabilities transform themselves, their communities and the world.
