"Supervisors play an important role in how our community deals with a wide variety of resource management issues, including wetlands, water quality, soil erosion, and wildlife habitat," said Jay Riggs, district manager with the WCD.

Conservation Districts are special purpose units of government that manage and direct conservation programs, such as the state Cost-Share Program and provide education and technical assistance for private landowners and other local units of government working on conservation projects. An elected board of supervisors governs each of Minnesota's 90 conservation districts.

Due to redistricting within Washington County, the WCD does not currently have an incumbent supervisor for the new District 5, which includes most of Woodbury. Candidates for this position will appear on the ballot for the general election which will take place Nov. 6. WCD supervisors serve four-year terms.

Supervisors meet monthly to discuss the business of the WCD, including state grant allocations to landowners, district conservation priorities, coordination with other local units of government and state agencies, and legislative priorities. Supervisors do not receive a salary, although they do receive compensation for attending meetings and are reimbursed for expenses.

Those interested in running for the post should file at the County Auditor's office now through June 5, 2012. Additional information about the WCD can be found online at www.mnwcd.org or by calling the office at 651-275-1136.
