Students and teachers had an opportunity to share their family stories with others on March 10 and 12 during the family share days at Woodbury Elementary. Eight students shared their family stories during the two days.

"For us to get along and relate on more than a fundamental level we need to know about one another," first grade teacher and event organizer John Flavin said. "Sharing their stories is great for others as we realize people have different and similar experiences."

The family share nights were part of WE's "Multicultural Family Literacy Around the World" event, which focused on the universal themes of family, education and community through books.

Students were treated to an assortment of cultural stories expressing these themes on March 5 during the kick-off event.

They were then asked to take the themes and messages they learned and apply them to their own family memories, and write a story of their own.

Some of the stories shared memories of a grandmother who is no longer here, family manner, bedtime prayers and parties.

"My favorite part of any activity is families relating to each other and the smiles of pride and success on the faces of family members," Flavin said.
