See what can grow from a tree
For most of us, we can think back on our lives and envision trees that were meaningful to us in some way. Whether it was their size, their placement near our homes, their color, whether they produced helicopters or acorns or some other special feature we remember, most of us can tell you a favorite tree or two from our growing up years. And imagine having the opportunity to provide a tree in the future for another child or adult to remember fondly?
When I was a fourth grader, we lived in a city about 70 miles south of the Twin Cities, and there was a magnificent maple tree in the back yard. I was an avid reader, and if my mother was ever looking for me, she knew she could find me sitting on a branch of this tree, leaning against the trunk, reading. The branch was so large and sturdy, and the trunk so stable and straight, that I could comfortably sit there for hours and literally get lost in a book.
When my husband and I were on the North Shore for our 20th anniversary several years ago, we were overcome by the beauty of the silver maples. We decided on that trip that we would come home and purchase just such a tree for our yard. Today, that tree is massive, home to several bird families and turns a glorious auburn color that endures for weeks in the fall.
There is an anonymous saying which states, "The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best is now." And the city of Woodbury has made this so easy for us, but we will have to act quickly, as the orders for a new tree are due this Friday, September 6. If you received the Woodbury City Update in August, you likely saw the article regarding the tree sale that the city is offering again this year. If you did not see it, or you were too busy at that time to take notice of it and cannot locate your copy, you may go to the Woodbury website, www.ci.woodbury.mn.un. Under "Quick Links" select "Parks of Woodbury," then click on "Forestry" to find the "Tree Sale" link. All of the information you will need can be found at this site.
We have an opportunity that will make planting a new tree so easy and convenient. If you have a space in your yard that would be a perfect place for a new tree, check out this website and order yours today. Contribute a lasting legacy to Woodbury by planting a new tree this year.
