School District 883 ends 110 probationary teaching jobs
The School District 833 School Board voted to terminate 110 probationary teaching jobs at the April 23 board meeting.
Teaching positions for those who have worked in the district for three or fewer years are ended each year by the board. If the jobs were not terminated, teachers automatically have contracts for the upcoming year even if there are no teaching jobs available, according to Mark Porter, assistant superintendent for legal services and human resources, who becomes superintendent at the end of June.
Many teachers are rehired, but that might not be the case this year. Ninety-three non-tenured teachers were released at this time last year with approximately 40 percent re-hired for the 2008-2009 school year.
Flat enrollment, the change from junior high to middle school, and a lower than projected number of retirements means fewer teachers will be hired back that in previous years, Porter said.
