The 2009 season began much the same way as the 2008 one did for the Woodbury girls soccer team -- a shootout win over Eden Prairie to win the Duluth East Tournament.

While this year's story has yet to be told, last season's tourney win launched the Royals on an undefeated trek that concluded with a win over the Eagles for the Class AA title.

Following a 2-0 defeat of Duluth East in the opener, on goals by Caitlin Graboski and Catie Sessions Woodbury and their arch-rivals to the west again locked horns in a contest that was not decided until the shootout round.

The game will go down in the books as a 1-1 tie, with both the Eagles and Royals commencing the season with a 1-0-1 record.

Eden Prairie led the contest 1-0 at the half before the Royals rallied to knot the score and push their unbeaten streak to 25 games as Sessions logged a second-half goal to send the game into an extra session.

Following a scoreless overtime, the teams went to a shootout for the second-consecutive season.

With matters still not decided after the initial round of five penalty kicks per side, the contest went to sudden death before goalkeeper Brittany Cygan stopped Eden Prairie's seventh attempt and Emily Moris scored for the Royals to finally give WHS the tourney title.

Back in the metro now, Woodbury is slated to host Cretin-Derham Hall on Thursday, Sept. 3 at Royals Stadium before welcoming Class A power Mahtomedi to town the following afternoon.
