Reconstruction of I-494 between Lake Road and I-94 in Woodbury and Maplewood begins June 1
On June 1, the Minnesota Department of Transportation will begin reconstructing I-494 from south of Lake Road to I-94. Night work will begin as crews rebuild the outside shoulders in both directions.
Lane closures will occur nightly between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., and daytime lane closures also may occur on weekends.
Motorists are advised to watch for ramp restrictions at the Lake Road, Valley Creek Road and Tamarack Road interchanges.
Work will be occurring near the ramps, and ramp traffic may need to yield to the I-494 traffic at the merge point.
This two-year project will connect existing auxiliary lanes between interchanges in order to provide three continuous lanes for traffic in each direction between the two points.
New concrete pavement will be installed over the existing pavement, and the southbound I-494 bridge over Century Avenue will be widened.
Freeway lighting north of Valley Creek Road will be added, providing continuous lighting on I-494.
This summer's work will consist of rebuilding the right shoulders in order to handle traffic, then switching to the median area for drainage improvements and pavement widening. The third lane in each direction will be open in 2010.
