Punch Pizza fires up wood-burning oven
Neopolitan style pizza has made its way to Woodbury.
After months of construction, Punch Pizza opened its eighth location here Friday, bringing authentic Italian ingredients to the east metro.
Co-owner John Soranno, who grew up in Milan, Italy escaped corporate life 17 years ago to open Punch Pizza.
His business partner John Puckett, co-founder of Caribou Coffee, joined him after selling Caribou 10 years ago.
The duo has been growing the business slowly, Soranno said, and worked to open a location in Woodbury over the past year.
“We’re excited to be here,” he said.
Punch Pizza opened for a special event Wednesday to help the Madison Claire Foundation raise money for a new all-inclusive playground to open at the Bielenberg Sports Center next year.
The business matched donations, which all added up to around $8,000, Soranno said.
Punch Pizza opened its doors at 11 a.m. Friday and held a ribbon cutting ceremony near its giant, mosaic, wood-burning oven.
The pizza is made to order with fresh ingredients imported from Italy and cooked in the 1,000-degree oven.
“That’s why it cooks so quickly and that’s why it’s so good,” Soranno said, noting that each one takes about 60 to 90 seconds.
Punch Pizza seats 60 patrons inside and an additional 50 on the patio that overlooks Valley Creek Road.
