Families came together for fitness Saturday during Middleton Elementary's first-ever Family Fitness Day.

For about an hour in the morning, parents and their children participated in a variety of activities at the school.

In addition to doing a few warm up activities, a pacer test and a game of tag, parents also used some of the equipment that students use on a daily basis such as stability balls, medicine balls, dumb bells, free weights and power walkers.

Parents and their children made their way through various activity stations.

"It's a way to let parents know what we do in phy ed," physical education teacher Joe Quintavalle said. "We use these things with our kids, so we want parents to see how we use it."

Quintavalle, who organized the event, said he decided to organize the Family Fitness Day because it was a chance to not only show parents what their children do in physical education every day but it was also a way to get parents and children exercising together.

"Hopefully this will inspire families to exercise together and get them out - and make it fun," he said. "It's a hard time of the year in the dead of winter to get out and do stuff, but there should never be an excuse not to."

Quintavalle said he is hoping to organize another Family Fitness Day this spring. Also, he said he is hoping to make it an annual event if the interest is there.

"Who knows where it's going to go from here, it's almost like an experiment this time around," he said.
