Our View: Keep on Relaying
You thought there was a big crowd last weekend at East Ridge High School for graduation?
Just you wait.
On Friday evening, the school's football stadium will fill with scores of people dedicated to fighting cancer. They will be part of the Relay for Life of South Washington County -- an event that raises money and awareness for the American Cancer Society.
The event commemorates those who have survived cancer, as well as those who have lost the battle. Both sides of the battle will be honored during Relay's moving Luminaria ceremony, where illuminated bags encircle the stadium's track.
The Luminaria ceremony will be introduced by Woodbury resident Steve Brennan and Woodbury High School graduate Jenny Burow, both of whom have inspiring stories of perseverance to share.
The event will include a special playing of "Clouds," the song written and performed by the late Zach Sobiech. The Lakeland teen lost his battle to cancer last month, though his message -- you don't have to be dying to start living -- will live on, thanks to the uplifiting song.
Additional details on the event are included in this week's special third section.
We commemorate those who work tirelessly to keep up the battle and pursue a cure.
