Nordic skiing: Bonneson, Danielson lead way as teams battle cold temps, conference foes
The PWER (Park, East Ridge and Woodbury) Nordic ski teams braved the elements last week to take on the rest of the Suburban East Conference in a meet at Battle Creek Regional Park in St. Paul on Wednesday.
The PWER Nordic teams practice together, compete in identical races (except for the section race) and are administrated by the same staff, but race as individual high schools.
With temperatures just over zero degrees, the Woodbury boys earned fifth place, the East Ridge boys took sixth place and the Park boys were eighth in the nine-team meet. On the girls side, Woodbury placed sixth, East Ridge was seventh and Park was ninth.
Park senior Evan Bonneson turned in the top finish for the PWER teams in the boys race. Bonneson took seventh place out of 97 skiers with a time of 14 minutes, 11 seconds in the 5-kilometer freestyle race.
Forest Lake’s Leo Hipp won the meet with a time of 12:49.
In addition to Bonneson, Woodbury’s Grant Davis took 15th place with a time of 15:04, Woodbury’s Paul Henning placed 26th in 16:02, East Ridge’s Jake Fabro was 30th in 16:32, Park’s Connor Gabbert earned 41st in 17:36, Woodbury’s Nathan Orf was 42nd in 17:46 and East Ridge’s Jeff Clinton took 43rd in 17:54.
Woodbury totaled 362 place points, East Ridge had 325 and Park scored 312. Forest Lake won the meet with 471 points.
In the girls race, Woodbury led the way with 33 points, East Ridge had 311 points and Park scored 261 points. Stillwater won the girls meet with 478 points.
Woodbury’s Kathleen Danielson had the top finish for the PWER teams, taking 18th overall out of 82 skiers with a time of 18:32. East Ridge’s Megan Schiferl wasn’t far behind, taking 23rd in 18:48.
Also, Woodbury’s Pauline Aamodt placed 27th in 19:25, Park’s Molly Haus was 39th in 20:29, East Ridge’s Olivia Hummel took 40th in 20:31, Woodbury’s Cat Henning was 45th in 21:17, East Ridge’s Emily Betz took 52nd in 22:18 and Woodbury’s Erin Stevenson was 55th in 23.07.
Caroline Brisbois of Roseville won the race in 15:10.
