Nordic skiing: Boardman wins Holiday Relays
The PWER (Park, Woodbury, East Ridge) Nordic ski teams combined for a big race on Saturday, Dec. 14.
Typically, the PWER Nordic teams practice together, compete in identical races (except for the section race) and are administrated by the same staff, but race as individual high schools.
This past week, PWER combined to take on a number of top teams from all over Minnesota and Wisconsin for the Holiday Relays at Trollhaugen in Dresser, Wis.
At the Holiday Relays — in the Skate Division — the PWER boys top relay team finished in sixth place out of 31 teams, while the PWER girls earned 12th out of 32 teams. The PWER boys finished with a total time of 33 minutes, 41 seconds. Stillwater won the race with a time of 31:33, topping Irondale (31:42) and St. Louis Park (32:15). The PWER girls had a total time of 42:59. Wayzata won the meet with a time of 35:43, edging Stillwater (35:55) and Roseville (38:05).
Individually, on the boys side, PWER skier Sam Boardman pulled off an impressive early season feat. Boardman, a senior who skies for East Ridge, finished in first place in the race. His time of 7:11 beat out 128 other skiers, including second-place finisher Dan DeLestry of Chippewa Valley, Wis., who had a time of 7:29. Other top finishers in the boys race for PWER included Woodbury sophomore Grant Davis, who placed 20th with a time of 8:16, East Ridge sophomore Jake Fabro, who had a time of 8:57, which was good for 46th place, Woodbury junior Paul Henning, who took 59th (9:17) and Park senior Connor Gabbert who took 73rd (9:38).
Woodbury sophomore Kathleen Danielson turned in the top time in the girls race for PWER. She finished in 34th place with a time of 10:17. Woodbury senior Pauline Aamodt had the second-best time for PWER, 10:14, which was good for 47th place. Other top times came from Park sophomore Cameron Anderson, who took 53rd with a time of 10:56 and East Ridge sophomore Keri McKenzie, who took 58th in 10:58.
Wayzata senior Alayna Sonnesyn won the race in 7:58.
PWER also combined for its Suburban East Conference race on Tuesday at Como Park Golf Course.
In the SEC race, the PWER boys finished fourth out of six teams and the PWER girls were sixth out of six teams. The PWER boys totaled 400 points and the girls earned 360 points. The Forest Lake boys won the meet with 457 points and the Stillwater girls won the meet with 471 points.
Individually, Boardman had the top finish for PWER in the boys race, taking sixth with a time of 16:04. Park senior Evan Bonneson was the second PWER skier across the finish line, taking 14th in a time of 16:42, while Davis was the third-best finisher taking 23rd in 17:45. Also, Henning took 36th (19:38), Fabro was 38th (19:49), Nathan Strom took 41st (20:10) and Gabbert placed 43rd (20:26).
Mounds View’s Steve Hokanson won the race in 15:10.
For the girls, Danielson turned in the top time, taking 19th in 20:36. Aamodt was the second PWER skier across the finish line, taking 29th in 22:11. Also, Anderson took 33rd (22:34), McKenzie was 39th (23:13) and Megan Schiferl was 43rd (23:47). Roseville’s Caroline Brisbois was the race’s winner in a time of 16:40.
