Police and firefighters were out in full force across Woodbury Tuesday evening as the community celebrated a Night to Unite.

More than three dozen neighborhoods sprinkled across the city limits organized block parties for the annual event that aims to bring public safety officials and residents together.

Public safety officials including police, firefighters and emergency medical technicians visited several parties during the event and took advantage of the occasion to meet neighbors and share in the barbecued food.

Tuesday was the first time the city began using the name Night to Unite for its annual evening out against crime. In the past the city used the National Night Out title.

The Night to Unite, a program of the Minnesota Crime Prevention Association (MCPA), is co-sponsored this year by AAA.

The Woodbury Public Safety Department decided to organize the annual event under the new title in attempt to no longer affiliate itself with the National Association of Town Watch, which has fallen under public scrutiny the last few years when the public gained knowledge regarding the compensation the executive director for the organization was earning.

The funds to support Night to Unite program primarily come from the Department of Justice and membership fees paid by law enforcement agencies throughout the county.
