New Life Academy volleyball: Eagles win Mounds Park Tournament; 12-3 overall
The New Life Academy volleyball team continued its torrid start and earned a championship trophy at the Mounds Park Tournament this past weekend.
New Life improved to 12-3 overall with 2-0 wins over St. Paul Academy, West Lutheran, Mounds Park Academy and St. Anthony in winning the Mounds Park Tournament for a fourth-straight year.
Prior to winning the tournament, New Life defeated Heritage Christian Academy on Tuesday, Sept. 18, on the road.
The Heritage win was a big one for the Eagles as NLA was able to beat a team that has historically been ranked highly and a team it has not beaten in many years on the volleyball court. In the Minnesota Christian Athletic Association game, New Life beat Heritage (6-12; 3-1 MCAA) in four games with scores of 25-19, 25-21, 21-25, and 25-22. Four ninth graders led the way for the Eagles as setter Kara Stenerson had 35 assists, and hitters Abby Thor, a 6' 1" middle hitter, had 13 kills, and outside hitters Abby Gorter and Sydney Mortenson added 12 kills and 10 kills, respectively in the win. Additionally, sophomore libero, Mattie Stocker, added 27 digs in the match. The win improved NLA to 2-0 in conference play, tied for the lead with fifth-ranked Southwest Christian.
The Eagles take on Bethany Academy on Tuesday. Next, NLA plays host to St. Agnes on Thursday in Woodbury.
