New Life Academy volleyball: Eagles soar to section semifinal
The New Life Academy Eagles volleyball team continued to soar last week.
New Life, the third in the playoffs, advanced to the Section 4A semifinals with a pair of 3-0 wins - over North Lakes Academy and Maranatha Christian Academy.
The Eagles, which improved its impressive record to 19-9 overall with the wins, first beat 14th-seeded North Lakes 25-9, 25-12, 25-3 on Wednesday, Oct. 24, in the second round, then won 25-13, 25-16, 25-18 over 11th-seeded Maranatha in the quarterfinals.
In the Maranatha match, sophomore Maddie Stocker had a team high 24 digs to lead the Eagles, while freshman Abby Gorter led the team with 15 kills and freshman setter Kara Stenerson had a team high 33 setting assists.
"Kara is a true team leader on the floor," NLA head coach Wally Bomgren said. "She not only makes our offense work, she is a great defender, able to anticipate plays very well."
The wins set up a showdown with No. 2 seed and fifth-ranked Mayer Lutheran on Tuesday, Oct. 30. The game will be held at 8 p.m. at Heritage Christian Academy. A win would propel the Eagles into the Section 4A championship against either fourth-seeded Lester Prairie or top-seeded Southwest Christian on Thursday, Nov. 1, at Bloomington Kennedy.
