New Life Academy volleyball: Eagles edged by St. Croix Lutheran in five

The youthful New Life Academy volleyball team took Class AA and Tri-Metro Conference power St. Croix Lutheran to the brink last week, but couldn’t get over the edge in a five-set loss.

St. Croix Lutheran (2-1) was a Class AA state entrant and beat the Eagles 3-0 last season. The Eagles, who are ranked 15th in the state in Class A to start the season, finished 18-10 overall and 7-1 in the Minnesota Christian Athletic Association conference last year. 

In this year’s match, held Thursday, Aug. 29, at St. Croix Lutheran, New Life won the first two sets (25-22 and 25-18) before St. Croix Lutheran won the last three (25-16, 26-24 and 15-12). 

Individual statistics from the match were not made available. 

Prior to the loss, New Life Academy (1-2) made quick work of Randolph (1-1) on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at home, winning 25-6, 25-8 and 25-21 for a 3-0 victory – the Eagles’ first of 2013. 

Sophomore hitters Abby Thor and Abby Gorter led the offensive attack with 10 kills and nine kills, respectively. Gorter also provided solid defense with seven digs. Sophomore setter Kara Stenerson had a strong all-around game with a team-best 23 assists to go along with two kills, two aces and three digs, while freshman Hannah Nelson had a team-best four aces along with six digs and six kills. Also, junior libero Maddie Stocker had a team-high eight digs while sophomores Emma Hawkins, Julia Stone and Sydney Mortenson all had four kills apiece. 

Next, New Life is at Visitation for a 12-team tournament on Friday, Sept. 6.
