New Hobby Lobby now open
A whopping 50,000 square feet of retail space that has sat empty for five years in Woodbury has finally gotten a new tenant.
Hobby Lobby opens Friday in the former Sportsman’s Warehouse location near the Hudson Road and Woodbury Drive intersection.
The Woodbury location is the company’s third Minnesota store and first in the Twin Cities.
Store manager Barry Hewitt said many of the store’s clients have been driving to Mankato or Rochester to shop at Hobby Lobby. The Woodbury location will provide convenient access to all the merchandise for those who are familiar with it and introduce new shoppers to crafts, fabric, paper making and home décor items.
“Some people say ‘I’m not a crafter,’” he said. “Well, we don’t just have that. There is a lot that people can do. We’re not just a hobby store or a craft store.”
Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. are owned by the Green family, who started by building mini picture frames in the family’s garage 43 years ago in Oklahoma City.
The company hired 60 employees to open the Woodbury store, where 10 large trucks filled with merchandise were delivered and unloaded last week.
Despite the growing digital scrapbooking industry, Hewitt said customers still utilize actual paper crafts for their various projects.
“That’s why we changed it from scrapbooks to paper crafts,” he said of the department. “There is so much more in that category that we didn’t realize.”
Many of the artists featured at Hobby Lobby design a variety of different items, Hewitt said, so customers can match up fabrics with craft paper or wall art with storage bins.
Hobby Lobby is open Monday through Saturday and closed Sunday, a big shopping day, but it’s a tradition the founder and CEO David Green have embraced since the beginning.
“He believes that’s your day to spend with your family relaxing,” Hewitt said. “He stood by it and knows you get more of a return that your employees are rested and get that day with their family so they’re happy.”
Hobby Lobby has 556 stores nationwide and will have opened 626 by the end of the year.
