Medical report: Cottage Grove newborn's death 'accidental' after mother fell asleep on boy
A 3-week-old infant died Tuesday in Cottage Grove when his sleeping mother suffocated him, according to police and an initial autopsy report.
The newborn's death, while initially ruled accidental, is being investigated by police. The case will be reviewed by the Washington County Attorney's Office for possible criminal charges.
A parent of the boy called emergency dispatch to report that the infant was not breathing, according to Cottage Grove police. Emergency crews were sent at 10:38 a.m. to a townhome in the 8800 block of 90th Street.
Officers attempted CPR until medics arrived and transported the infant to Woodwinds Hospital in Woodbury. The baby was pronounced dead at the hospital. The baby was identified as Adrian A. Medrano, born Nov. 1.
A preliminary investigation found that the mother had fallen asleep on the infant and suffocated him, police said.
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's office conducted an autopsy late Tuesday. Initial findings ruled the cause of death asphyxia and the manner of death accidental.
The medical examiner's report will be "significant" in determining possible criminal charges, Washington County Attorney Pete Orput said Wednesday.
"That would preclude me from going any further - conceivably," Orput said of the death being ruled accidental.
A decision on possible criminal charges is not expected until next week at the earliest, Orput said.
