Lorraine Joy Burt, 73
Lorraine Joy Burt, age 73, died in Northfield, Minn., on Saturday, Nov. 16 of complications associated with corticobasal degeneration.
On Feb. 5, 1940, Lorraine was one of twin girls born to George and Dagmar (Kvam) Larson at their rural home near Clearbrook, Minn. After her parents died in 1949, Lorraine and her twin Lorrette were raised by Helmer and Anna Johnson and Walter and Edyth Sovick of Clearbrook. Lorraine graduated from Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Fergus Falls in 1958 and then spent a year at Lutheran Brethren Bible College and Augsburg College before completing her Elementary Ed. degree at the University of Minnesota.
While at the U of M, Lorraine met James Burt, whom she married in 1967. The couple moved to Illinois where Jim attended graduate school and Lorraine taught second grade. During their stay in Illinois, the family experienced sadness when a daughter was born and died at birth, but then joy when a son and another daughter were born. In 1978, the family moved to Woodbury, Minn. The family suffered a terrible loss in 1987 when son Charles was killed in a motorcycle accident. After her divorce in 2001, Lorraine continued to live in Woodbury until her health prompted moves to Chicago to be near her daughter, and then to Rochester Minn. to be near her twin sister. After a fall, Lorraine moved to a nursing home in Northfield.
As well as being a homemaker and mother, Lorraine did substitute teaching and pursued writing. She was an avid tennis player and enjoyed playing in a senior tennis league. Lorraine also enjoyed singing in choir and Bible Study Fellowship throughout her life.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter; son Charles; sister Joan Larson; and brothers Walter, and James Larson.
She is survived by daughter Elizabeth (Gregory) Knapp; grandson McKeon Knapp; twin sister Lorrette (Robert) Strack; and sister Estelle Dunderland.
