Long delays for Woodbury mail? You're not alone
If you've found yourself wondering why mail isn't arriving until the sun goes down, you're not alone.
Several routes were cut in recent weeks at the Woodbury U.S. Postal Service location. Postal service spokesman Pete Nowacki said the route reduction has resulted in delivery delays for some Woodbury residents.
He confirmed that in some cases the change has meant residents not receiving mail until 7:30 p.m.
"We do understand that it is taking a little longer in some places," Nowacki said. "We appreciate their patience as we go through some growing pains here."
Growing, however, is not what's been happening at the Woodbury post office. Nowacki said that while there have not been local layoffs as a result of the changes, six routes were eliminated.
The delays have been a result of workers adapting to "new routes and new territory."
Nowacki said it's almost impossible to say how many customers have been impacted by the changes, but said "it's not unusual for a substantial number of customers" to see a change in delivery times.
The changes went into effect July 8. Nowacki said that apart from the delays, there have been no other direct effects on postal customers.
Nowacki said post office officials review route structure regularly, but -- due to cuts at the national level -- those reviews have been on the rise locally. Mail volume has dropped about 20 percent over the past five years, he added.
"We have to take a look at every aspect of our operations" to accomplish efficiencies, Nowacki said.
He said local delivery delays will tail off as carriers become more familiar with the changes. He added that postal officials will review the Woodbury route changes in September and decide if additional changes must be made.
