Legion White wins Forest Lake title
Three wins of increasing magnitude earned the first tournament title of the year for the Woodbury Legion White baseball team as the Royals took home the crown from the Forest Lake Invitational June 22.
Woodbury defeated St. Francis, 7-5 and Cloquet, 10-5, before dismantling Richfield, 15-3, in the championship game to clinch the title.
Pitcher Mike Brandmire went the distance in the final, earning the win by scattering seven hits and three runs over five innings of work.
Nick Ender led the Royals at the plate with four hits, three runs scored and five batted in.
A two-run triumph in the tourney opener one day previous was secured with thanks to pitcher Nick Scarrella, who allowed just three earned runs on three hits and three walks.
Danny Koop and Mike Seidel helped ensure Scarrella the complete-game win with two RBI apiece.
A Kyle Kronforst home run put the exclamation point on Woodbury's five-run win over Cloquet with pitcher Mike Harman earning the win with six strikeouts in six innings of work.
Mike Rommes accounted for four of the Royals' 10 runs with three RBI and one scored on a 3-for-5 day at the plate.
White could not stick to its winning ways June 23, however, as Red Wing brought Woodbury back down to earth with a 10-3 loss.
Harman went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the losing effort, with Ender taking the loss on the hill.
The loss dropped Woodbury to 6-2 heading into a June 24 contest at Northfield, played after the Bulletin went to press.
