"This event was created in 2006 to support a student who was fighting breast cancer," said Jazzercise owner, instructor and benefit organizer Renee Nelson. "She is now a breast cancer survivor and this annual event is to honor her and our other members who are survivors.

"Because of the tough economic conditions this year, we hesitated doing this event. However, we decided to go ahead with it because women are diagnosed with breast cancer every day regardless of the stock market and the value of their 401K."

Despite the odds, Nelson reported positive results from this year's event.

"We had the largest turnout yet -- the energy was just amazing."

Held at Woodbury Junior High, the event drew more than 65 participants. Raffle prizes were given away, including themed gift baskets.

Now celebrating its 38th year, Jazzercise, created by Judi Sheppard Missett, is a leading dance-fitness program.

Nelson has been the owner of Woodbury Jazzercise for more than 11 years and has taught for 20 years.
