Gymnastics: East Ridge sophomore trio springs to state
East Ridge pulled off a record-setting performance Friday at the Section 3AA championship meet en route to a second-place finish at Eagan High School.
The Raptors set a school record with 146.025 points and finished just .825 points behind title-winner Rosemount.
“I thought they performed amazingly,” East Ridge head coach Brittany Morris said. “I’ve never seen them come together like that before.”
The Raptors came into the meet on the heels of a season-best score of 144.65 against Mounds View in their final regular season meet. However, Morris said the 146.025 came unexpectedly.
Though the Raptors didn’t reach the state meet as a team, sophomores Taryn Johnson, Wren Anderson and Megan Trollen all advanced to the state meet for East Ridge. Trollen will make her second appearance at state after finishing third all-around. Anderson finished fourth in all-around and won the uneven bars with a 9.45. Anderson tied for first in the floor exercise.
Also at the Section 3AA meet, the Park Wolfpack took third place and the Woodbury Royals finished in sixth place.
After winning the section championship title the past two years, Park finished in third place with 143.05 points.
Sarah Schank will return to the state meet after winning the all-around title with 37.525 points. Schank tied for first in the floor exercise, took fourth in the vault, second in the uneven bars and fourth on the balance beam.
The Wolfpack set a season-high with the 143.05 score.
“I don’t think we were coming into it expecting to win it, but I think the girls had the best meet of the season,” Park co-head coach Krissie Thrush said.
The Royals finished with 130.1 points, good for sixth overall and did not advance any individuals to the state meet, which begins Friday at the Sports Pavilion at the University of Minnesota.
