Due to its size (over 3 square miles) and location along the Mississippi River, Grey Cloud Island is steeped in history, and was home to Native American Indians and once held the historic town of Grey Cloud. The island is now home to large-scale mining operations.

Greening is collaborating with Aggregate Industries and PAS Associates to begin a long-term, multi-year effort to restore Grey Cloud Island to its natural state.

Volunteers will assist with the removal of non-native brush, such as buckthorn, honeysuckle and other trees to set the stage for oak savanna restoration in 2010.

Individuals, community organizations and corporate groups are welcome to participate in Greening's restoration event. Pre-registration is required. The event will be held Saturday, Oct. 17, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and lunch will be provided.

Volunteers will receive confirmation one week prior to the event with directions and event details.

Register online at www.greatrivergreening.org under "Volunteer" or contact Mark Turbak, Volunteer Programs and Events anager, at mturbak@greatrivergreening.org or 651-665-9500 ext. 11.
