Former School District Superintendent Tom Nelson is being considered for the post of interim superintendent in the Stillwater School District.

In an interview July 18, Nelson confirmed that he's talked to a Stillwater School Board member about the position that would begin this summer and end July 1 of next year when the board is expected to pick a permanent superintendent, board members said at the July 15 meeting last week.

Nelson retired from District 833 at the end of the 2005 school year, four years after retiring as superintendent in Buffalo, Minn., the previous year.

After leaving 833, he moved to Arizona.

"Stillwater is an excellent school district," he said. "I'm not very good at retirement. I need to be productive and busy. Minnesota is home and where I've spent my entire career except for three years in Jackson Hole, Wyo."

If Nelson is named to the Stillwater interim post, it would be part of an unusual swap between districts.

Stillwater Superintendent Keith Ryskoski takes the post of District 833 assistant superintendent for secondary education on Aug. 1.

The Stillwater School Board is expected to interview for the interim position this week.

Under Nelson's watch, some of the most sweeping changes took place in District 833 history including changing all attendance boundaries, building East Ridge High School and changing junior highs to middle schools. It also moved ninth-graders to high school.
