This year marks the first year that Footprints Academy has a school choir.

At the Community Expo, the Footprints Academy choir will sing the national anthem during the opening flag ceremony, performed by the St. Croix Squadron Minnesota Wing Civil Air Patrol.

"It will be very cool to have the flag ceremony," said Heidi Hickey, member services director for the Woodbury Chamber of Commerce and Woodbury Community Expo coordinator. "It's a very neat ceremonial start."

The choir will also perform a selection of patriotic songs from 11-11:20 a.m.

Some of the songs include "God Bless America" and "This Land is Your Land."

"They requested the national anthem and then with that in mind our music teacher went off of that," Footprints Academy Principal Darlah Krug said.

Even though Footprints Academy has always had music classes and offered private voice lessons, the school never had its own choir and it was something parents always asked about, Krug said.

"We thought it would be extra special to give them an opportunity for something else," she said. "And honestly, the popularity of the show 'Glee' got students talking about it last year."

The Footprints Academy choir had its debut performance at the school's "Grandparents Day" celebration.

Krug said students have been prepping for the Woodbury Community Expo for the past couple months because it will essentially be their first community performance that isn't just for families.

"They're really looking forward to getting out into the community and entertaining community members," she said. "To have something to look forward to outside of a school performance is very special for them - it showcases the wonderful things that are going on at Footprints Academy."
