Family members displaced after overnight house fire in Afton
Three family members safely escaped a burning house early today in Afton.
Firefighters responded to a fully engulfed blaze at about 1 a.m. at 4696 Trading Post Trail. Lower St. Croix Fire Department Chief Chris Peterson said the home was "basically a total loss," and displaced the three adults living there.
Washington County tax records indicate the home, valued in 2012 at $454,600, is owned by Michael and Sandra Conroy.
Peterson said the family is living with family members.
Residents were alerted by a smoke alarm after fire broke out in the basement, Peterson said. The fire's cause remained under investigation. Peterson said the fire did not appear to be suspicious.
It's possible one or more cats living in the two-story house may have died in the fire, Peterson said.
No firefighters among the six agencies that responded were hurt in the blaze. Lower St. Croix was assisted by Woodbury, Cottage Grove, Hudson, Lake Elmo and Maplewood fire departments, which helped provide water since the area is not serviced by fire hydrants.
