Lyden, ranked eighth in Class AAA at 106 pounds beat Bennyhoff, ranked fourth in the weight class, 11-7 in the first round on Friday, March 2, at the Xcel Energy Center at St. Paul.

Lyden (38-3) opened up a 7-1 lead on Bennhoff (38-3) in the first period and hung on for the win. Lyden scored two takedowns and a nearfall in the first. Bennyhoff cut the deficit to 9-7 in the second period. However, Lyden scored a takedown with 20 seconds remaining in the third period to go up 11-7 and all but seal the win.

Lyden now faces Bemidji freshman Brian Mass (32-5) in the quarterfinals tonight, Friday, March 2. Quarterfinals begin at 5 p.m. A win over Mass, who is unranked, would move Lyden into the semifinals on Saturday, March 3, at 11:15 a.m. A loss to Mass would put Lyden in the consolation bracket and force him to wrestle again tonight, Friday, March 2, in the "wrestlebacks" beginning at 8 p.m.
