East Ridge wrestling: Bachmann falls in first round, needs help to stay alive
East Ridge senior Nick Bachmann suffered a loss to Lakeville South senior Eric Hensel in the opening round of the Class AAA state wrestling tournament on Friday, March 4 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, but still has a chance to stay alive in the tournament.
Because of the loss, Bachmann, who was 30-8 on the year and unranked in Class AAA at 171 pounds, needs Hensel, who is now 38-0 on the year and ranked second in Class AAA at 171 pounds, to defeat Cambridge-Isanti junior Clayton Jennissen in the Class AAA individual quarterfinals in order to continue in the consolation round or "wrestlebacks," where he could contend for as high as third place. However, a Hensel loss to the third-ranked Jennissen would end Bachmann's state tournament and high school wrestling career.
Hensel and Jennissen will wrestle in the Class AAA quarterfinals tonight, beginning at 8 p.m.
