East Ridge target of Park student-athlete recruiting allegations
Park student-athlete recruiting claims made against East Ridge
By Patrick Johnson
Park High School student-athletes claim East Ridge High School's activities director and other representatives are trying to recruit them to switch schools and play sports for the Raptors.
The allegations are believed to be part of an internal review undertaken by District 833 administrators that deals with student transfers. The issue could further fuel a growing rivalry between the schools just a year and a half after East Ridge opened.
At least one Park student has said an East Ridge official reached out to him about transferring to the intra-district rival, and Park's activities director said he has given district administrators information he collected after looking into similar claims.
Minnesota State High School League policy prohibits school officials from contacting students from other schools about transferring to their school to participate in a sport. In such cases, the league can publicly censure a school, remove it from tournament competition or suspend it from the league.
Park Activities Director Phil Kuemmel said he met with East Ridge Activities Director Trent Hanson, Woodbury Activities Director Jason Schultz and District Assistant Superintendent Keith Ryskoski on Jan. 19 and again Monday to discuss recruiting claims and the student transfer issue.
District officials would not discuss details of the internal review.
