East Ridge softball: Ihns throws no-hitter to help Raptors sweep Bears

In a doubleheader against White Bear Lake Wednesday, East Ridge junior starting pitcher Kelsey Ihns threw a complete-game no-hitter in the first game and allowed just one run on five hits, while striking out 15, in the second game to improve to 7-4 on the year.

Kelsey Ihns was spectacular on Wednesday, helping the East Ridge softball team sweep White Bear Lake.

East Ridge beat White Bear Lake 4-0 and 2-1 in the Suburban East Conference doubleheader. Ihns, a junior starting pitcher, won both games to improve to 7-4 on the year. In the 4-0 win in the opener, Ihns threw a complete-game no-hitter. In game two, Ihns allowed just one run on five hits, while striking out 15.

In the 4-0 win, East Ridge (9-8; 9-8 SEC) scored all four of its runs in the first inning and rode Ihns to the win. Freshman Christina Pickett was 3-for-4 with a run, freshman Megan Tarara was 2-for-4 with a run and two steals and junior Kayla Bohlke went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

In the second game, East Ridge took a 2-0 lead with a run in the first inning and a run in the third inning. White Bear Lake (2-12; 2-12 SEC) scored a run in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 2-1, but the Raptors held on for the win. Pickett was 2-for-2 with a double and Bohlke went 2-for-4 with a run.

East Ridge has now won five of its past seven games, including beating rivals Park (7-6; 6-6 SEC) once and Woodbury (8-7; 8-7 SEC) twice, and sits in fourth place in the Suburban East Conference. The Raptors only losses came Tuesday at Forest Lake, which leads conference at 14-2 and is 15-2 overall. East Ridge lost 5-1 and 14-9 to the Rangers. On Monday, East Ridge swept Woodbury with 4-2 and 3-1 wins.

The Raptors close out the regular season on Thursday, May 16, at Totino-Grace at 4:15 p.m. The Section 4AAA playoffs begin Monday, May 20, at McKnight Fields in North St. Paul.
