East Ridge boys tennis: Raptors open season with win
In-between the snow and rain the East Ridge boy tennis team was able to squeeze in a match.
The Raptors started their season last week with a 6-1 non-conference win on the road over St. Paul Central.
On Wednesday, April 4, East Ridge took down Central sweeping doubles and winning three of four singles matches.
In the win, East Ridge No. 1 doubles team of junior Greg Sharrow and eighth grader Ben Van der Sman won 6-0, 6-1 over Central seniors Simon Lancaster and Jonas Toghai. Also in doubles matches, the junior duo of Phillip Cai and Evan Lu won 6-3, 6-0 over William Brueggmann and Jon Tuttle at second doubles and junior Aaron Christianson and sophomore Saarthak Madan won 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 over Henry Theis-Micek and Evan Holmes.
In singles play, sophomore Vishaal Gupta won 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) over Vinney Kennedy at second doubles, freshman Nikhil Gupta won 6-2, 7-5 over Tony Howard and sophomore Riley Pratt defeated Elias Holfrenning 6-2, 6-2. East Ridge No. 1 singles player Zak Nigatu fell 6-2, 6-2 to Central's Cason Hiers, who was a state entrant last year.
Because of the inclement weather and the fact the East Ridge courts still have snow and ice on them, the Raptors needed to reschedule three matches.
East Ridge's match against Highland Park on April 1 was cancelled, the match with Irondale on April 3 was rescheduled for April 15 and the Royal-Raptor eight-team tournament set for April 6 was moved to April 27.
This week, East Ridge was set to play Hill-Murray on Tuesday, April 9, after the Bulletin went to print. Next, the Raptors are set to play host to Park on Thursday, April 11.
