It was a historic night for the Raptors. 

The East Ridge boys swimming and diving team earned its first state titles in school history on Saturday, March 1, at the Class AA state meet. East Ridge won three state championships on the night – in the 200-yard medley relay, the 400-yard freestyle relay and in the 50-yard freestyle. The Raptors fell just short of a team championship at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.

East Ridge earned second place in the state meet with 194 points. Wayzata took first place with 237 points. Eden Prairie, the defending state champion, was third with 169 points.

The East Ridge 200-yard medley relay started the state meet off right for the Raptors, winning East Ridge’s first championship title in boys swim history in the first event of the meet. The Raptors team of junior James Tidd, senior Sam Scholz, junior Kent Rabideaux and senior Ryan Schiferl won the 200 medley in 1 minute, 35.60.

Tidd then won his own state championship title in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.77 seconds. Tidd edged Edina senior Buzz Rehnberg, who was second with a time of 20.85. Rabideaux finished third in the 50 with a time of 21.32.

East Ridge ended the meet on a high note, winning the 400-yard freestyle relay. In the last event of the night, Tidd, Scholz, Rabideaux and junior Garrett Verhoeven finished first with a time of 3:07.69. Eden Prairie took second place in 3:08.95.

Scholz placed in the top four in his two individual events, taking third in the 200-yard individual medley and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke. Verhoeven earned ninth place in the 500-yard freestyle and Alex Heide placed 16th in the 100-yard breaststroke.

East Ridge earned the Suburban East Conference championship for a second straight time this year and is will be riding a 25-meet win streak in dual meets into next season.
