East Ridge boys hockey: Raptors fall to Bloomington Jefferson in opener
Bloomington Jefferson overwhelmed East Ridge Tuesday with 41 shots on goal in a 2-0 season-opening victory for the Jaguars in Bloomington.
Ranked 20th in Class AA in the latest coaches’ poll, Bloomington Jefferson (2-0) got a pair of goals from Tyler Johnson for the win. Johnson scored his first goal 2 minutes, 34 seconds into the second period and added a power-play goal 2:31 into the third period.
The Raptors (0-2) tallied only 17 shots in the nonconference game and had just two in the third period.
East Ridge senior goaltender Tyler Guck made 39 saves to keep the Raptors in the game.
Following the loss, the defending Section 3AA champions Eastview showed last year’s state tournament appearance may not have been a fluke Saturday with a 7-2 victory over East Ridge in Eagan.
Raptors junior forward Zack Boerjan spotted East Ridge a 1-0 lead at 8 minutes, 45 seconds into the game on an assist from senior forward Colin Borsheim but the Lightning controlled the rest of the game from there.
Eastview scored the next six goals of the game with Tommy Hutsell notching two goals while John Snodgrass, Cole McDevitt, Cole Cooper, Keith Muehlbauer and Nick Hodgen all adding goals in the rout.
The Lightning put 31 shots on goal despite taking eight penalties in the game.
East Ridge senior Conor NewKirk scored at 10:03 of the third period on an assist from Borsheim and senior Jake Nickoloff.
The Raptors finished with 26 shots on goal.
Guck made 24 saves in the loss.
Next, East Ridge faces Stillwater Thursday in Stillwater.
