Bernhardson said he had a “superb experience” as an elementary school principal there in 1998-99 and has stayed in touch with the district over the years.

“I have watched the fabulous things that have happened there,” he said. “They’ve got a very solid foundation and with the skills I have it seems (like) a great match.”

The other superintendent finalist was John Bezek, a former Park High School assistant principal and Tartan High School principal who serves as assistant superintendent in Shakopee.

Both finalists toured the Inver Grove Heights district this week before final interviews with the school board, whose members unanimously selected Bernhardson. His hiring will be formally approved May 5.

“The board members look forward to an exciting future for the district,” said Inver Grove Heights School Board Chair Cindy Nordstrom.

Bernhardson has been District 833’s assistant superintendent for elementary education since 2009. He oversees elementary schools and preschool programming among other responsibilities. He previously was a Woodbury Elementary School principal and has a teaching background. He said District 833 has been good to him.

In March, Bernhardson and Keith Ryskoski, assistant superintendent for secondary education, announced they were leaving District 833. The resignations are effective June 30. Bernhardson said he plans to stay on the job until then.

Inver Grove Heights enrolls about 3,700 students in three elementary schools, a middle school and Simley High School.
