District 833 not in line with elementary school art standards
Efforts are underway to correct a missing piece of curriculum in School District 833 elementary school classes, according to District Curriculum Director Becky Schroeder.
The art curriculum had not been in line with state requirements for 18 months, she said.
Schroeder was at Royal Oaks Elementary School in Woodbury recently to see how the school is incorporating art into the existing day.
All district elementary schools were able to hire an extra teacher this year. Schools, with the principal and teacher site teams, could choose the areas of need in their schools. Royal Oaks hired an art specialist.
Also on the list of decisions for next year is how to use the second year of grant money to begin teaching world languages to elementary-students.
This year, Mandarin Chinese language classes are being taught before or after school in all elementary buildings. She said the current program remains strong with few students dropping out.
Next year, teaching language within the school day is under consideration. Not all schools will choose Mandarin Chinese to be taught, she said.
