"Nunsense," the first performance at the new theater at the Dorothy K. Merrill Community Arts Center-East Ridge High School Campus, opens April 11.

The play is a comedy about a fundraiser put on by the Little Sisters of Hoboken to raise money to bury sisters accidently poisoned by the convent cook.

"The show is just so funny," director Lenore Weir said. "I'm still laughing while I watch them rehearse even though I've seen it so many times now."

Weir said she chose "Nunsense" as the first show to break in the black box theater because its small cast of five and minimal set makes it a perfect candidate for the smaller theater.

"It's the perfect kind of a show for a black box," she said. "It's conducive for a small theater."

Weir said she chose a comedy specifically because WCT traditionally never does straight comedies because it always relied heavily on big productions.

The black box theater is allowing them to do shows that they normally would not have the opportunity to do.

Weir, who typically directs the large scale musicals for WCT, said it's been an interesting challenge working with only a cast of five.

"There's so many additional things you can do with individual characters," she said. "You can flesh out the characters a lot more with a small show."

Breaking in the black box

As exciting as opening the first show at the black theater is, Weir said it hasn't been without challenges however.

She said she has had to figure out how the lighting, sound and sets all fit together since WCT has never done this before at the black box theater.

"It is actually so much fun to figure out," she said. "It's just fascinating to think about."

Weir said she is looking forward to opening night and being able to showcase the black box theater through such a funny show.

"It's going to be just fun," she said. "I can't wait for opening night because the cast is ready is now."
