Savage police officer Frank Mackall suffered head injuries in a one-vehicle accident early Monday, according to the State Patrol. Mackall was responding to a call shortly after 1 a.m. when he lost control on an icy road in Scott County, in the southwest metro. His squad left the road and struck a tree.

Mackall, 39, lives in Cottage Grove with his wife, Lisa, and three children, according to Savage police.

Mackall served as a volunteer reserve officer with the Cottage Grove Police Department from May of 2006 to March of 2007, said Craig Woolery, Cottage Grove public safety director. Mackall then went to work for a short time in the Woodbury Police Department before being hired in Savage in July of 2008.

"I knew Frank was a good candidate" to be a police officer," Woolery said. "He was a good reserve officer."

Woolery said volunteer reserve officers perform a variety of tasks as they assist police.

"Frank was always willing to help out being a part of the community," Woolery said.

Savage police reported that Mackall remained in critical condition at North Memorial hospital in Robbinsdale.
