But in order to keep pace with projected population growth, the system is expected to grow by 20,000 additional acres of park land and more than 600 miles of park trails by 2030, according to officials at the Twin Cities Metropolitan Council.

Last week Met Council Chairman Peter Bell presented information to the Washington County Board of Commissioners on the council's plan to help accumulate funds for future park land acquisition through development of the Regional Parks Foundation of the Twin Cities.

The recently formed non-profit organization is aimed at utilizing private donations from Twin Cities parks enthusiasts, Bell told Washington County commissioners at their May 12 meeting.

The Washington County Board of Commissioners voted to approve a resolution of support for the foundation and appointed Washington County Parks director John Elholm to the foundation's board of directors.
