Country Road 18 slated for improvements in 2009
A stretch of county road 18 that runs through Afton is slated for a reconstruction project in 2009.
The Washington County Board of Commissioners voted June 18 to designate CR-18 as a type III natural preservation route, which will allow the county to make some improvements to the road next year.
The 4.2-mile route from Old Highway 95 to St. Croix Trail was originally constructed in 1926 and has never been reconstructed. County transportation officials said the road has received some minor improvements, but needs major repair.
County transportation officials worked with the city of Afton to develop a preferred design for the roadway improvements that incorporate the natural preservation route standards as defined by the state department of transportation.
The road is scheduled for reconstruction as a part of the county's 2009 capital improvement program.
